RO had many of the same things you liked about Maple story: cutesy charm, 2d artstyle, anime inspired, trading market, and funny accessories to wear. Ragnarok Online (RO) released the previous year, and this heralded an era which saw the release of many Korean MMO's, most of them free to play but very grindy. I'm not sure I agree it changed gaming forever. Hey everyone thank you so much for sharing ur love/hate for the game, it was really very eye opening. I still believe for that 4 years it changed gaming forever.ĭo you think it belongs on such lists as "top 100 games that changed gaming" or "top 10 MMOs of all time"? Or am i just blinded by nostalgia? While I largely stopped playing like many others after Bigbang update slowly killed the game. Maple to me was about the community, about its cutesy charm, 2d artstyle, its anime-esque settings, its interesting worlds, party quests, trading in free market, spamming emotes, ability to change ur characters looks through it wide variety of cash shop offerings. Leading the way for many other games from korea to spread throughout the world.īut of course noone remembers Maple for their aggresive MTX. It also introduced and broke the ice on a korean game making it in the western market. While many mmos in the east started and popularized aggressive MTX, the success of maplestory in the west, meant many games since then copied such P2W models. It also helped to popularize MTX in the west. The whole reason an entire gaming genre "Gacha" can be basically attributed to maplestory speaks to its impact on gaming. Its legacy can also be felt today via its popularisation of lootboxes aka "gachapon" aka "gacha". It was also very successful in terms of revenue generated. In the golden age of MMOs, Maple would rank 2-4 (god damn wow) in terms of popularity. Even in online discussions, one rarely hears about maplestory. The only lists that mention it are usually those of player counts/revenue. In the lists of top MMOs of all time, it is pretty uncommon to find any mention of maplestory. So why has the community at large (Mainly mmo, but gaming altogether), never talk about maplestory and its impact/legacy. While one could argue that its gameplay was relatively simple, it was relatively unique in the field of tab battle made popular by WOW. It had a very strong casual appeal that allowed it to capture an audience that almost every MMO since has failed to do so (FFXIV being the exception imo). Maplestory was one of the most popular MMORPGS of all time.
